Show Me Your Love…and when you do, what will it look like?
When I wrote this poem, it wasn’t directed at one person, but it spoke to a host of feelings that I’ve experienced over my many years. The intimacy of love of any kind, whether it be between lovers or the best of plutonic friends, is such an overwhelming thing. I believe that love is an absolute necessity for every life, yet it is one emotion that can be the most difficult to master…when giving and receiving it.
Show Me Your Love
The warmth of your smile;
the gentleness in your voice;
the kindness in your eyes when you look at me…
Is that your love?
When you tell me what you are thinking;
when you share your fears, your thrills,
when you ask me to hold you and never let you go…
Is that your love?
I cannot tell sometimes; so many times it seems absent.
When you are there, but do not say a word;
when I ask something of you, but you do not respond;
when I need you to hold me, but you are not there…
Is that your love, too?
It is your love that I covet most; it is so precious to me.
Do I dare even try to reach for it? Is it too much to ask for?
Your love…your love can fill me up and cause me never to hunger again.
It can also starve me to the point of death…in my heart.
I wonder, will you tell? Will you show me your love?
And when you do, will I recognize it? Will I know it?
…answer me.
