On Dignity

On Dignity

on dignityA Quote to Carry You

September 15, 2014

“She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future.”  Proverbs 31:25

When I think of dignity, I first think of human life, and what high regard I place on it.  Everyone who has been born and lived has worth…for life itself has incomprehensible value.  I believe that we each have a responsibility to live our lives in a manner worthy of the very gift of life we’ve been given.  I challenge everyone, myself included, to live out the rest of our days with a dignity, strength, confidence and grace that will set the example for others to follow.  Can you imagine what goodness will happen if we do just that?

Peace and love,

Felecia

Jonathan’s Friend

Jonathan's friend

Jonathan’s friend, an Adler Flycatcher bird

Jonathan’s friend…those for whom we care so much are not always human.  Nonetheless, the gratitude they give has a way of touching our hearts deeply.

Animals have a way of touching our hearts in ways that humans cannot.  I have experienced such warmth and love over the years from our little family dogs, Sidney and Bilbo.  When they first entered our home, Sidney as a puppy and Bilbo as an adult dog that we adopted, I felt the need to care for and protect them.  As they gradually became part of our family, our “four-legged furry children,” it seems as though they were the ones providing much of the love and caring.

The poem below is based on a true-life story which was relayed to me by my dear friend and Godmother, Marilyn Hill.  It tells the story of how her neighbor and dog-sitter, Jonathan, befriended a little Adler Flycatcher bird.  Jonathan’s friend sought and received food, shelter and care in her time of need.  But it was Jonathan who received so much more…a sense of love and gratitude and the hope of seeing her again.

Jonathan’s Friend

My what a surprise the little bird did give,

when she landed on my shoulder that day.

Jonathan's friend

How strange it was to see a little creature like her;

so bold, inquisitive and wanting only to stay.

I saw that she was injured and needed my help!

I told her not to fear; that I’d look after her night and day long.

Jonathan's friendSo I fed her, I cared for her and I protected her from harm.

What small things it seems, for in return she sang her sweet song.

The way she gobbled up her berries and flew playfully to and fro.

Her quiet gentleness in simple things surely made me glad.

She brightened my heart and oh how she made me smile…

Her broken wing was healing…that made me both happy and sad.

Jonathan's friendI thought she’d just gone out for her morning frolic in the trees.

But when she did not return, I knew that she’d decided to leave.

Oh my little friend, I will miss caring for you indeed.

Until you return next year, it is to memories of you I will cleave.

On Caring for Others

On Caring for Others

on caring for othersA Quote to Carry You

September 8, 2014

“It is an absolute human certainty that no one can know his own beauty or perceive a sense of his own worth until it has been reflected back to him in the mirror of another loving, caring human being.”  John Joseph Powell, The Secret of Staying in Love

I had the privilege of experiencing this first hand.  Similarly in finding “beauty in the ashes,” I discovered a rich oasis of the most wonderful life-giving water when I gave fully of myself to my husband during the time when he needed me the most.  Not only did I sprout a new strength , confidence, and seemingly endless vigor doing all that was required of me as his caregiver.  His quiet determination to maintain the nobility that traced his character throughout his life provided a wellspring of blessings that have helped to make it possible for me to tread the dark waters until they became clear.

May you never be fearful to wade through the murky  seas, for they can provide a buoyancy that will see you safely to shore.

Peace and love,

The Beauty of Change

beauty of change

The beauty of change is hidden sometimes…but oh what wondrous splendor there is to experience when we find it.

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens…”  Ecclesiastes 3:1

I am sure you’ll agree that change can be uncomfortable.   In fact, it can be down right scary, ugly even.  We all have a certain way of doing things, a certain level of comfort in knowing what to expect, for the most part, from day to day.  When our routine, our way of life gets disrupted, it can seem impossible to see the beauty of change.

It is easy to see the beauty of change between the four seasons,  The gradual melting of winter into spring is a welcome transition full of brightness and hope.  Then that brightness fades as the blaze of summer tempers itself into the subtle coolness of autumn. When change takes place in our lives, things don’t always happen so serenely.  Often times it comes from out of nowhere, and it throws us way off balance.  We can hardly stand to face it, let alone see the beauty of change.  Is there really such a thing?

Honestly, I can say yes.  The very word “change” indicates that something is about to or has become what it was not before…it is in that transformation where the beauty of change is found.  The life changes that I have experienced just recently seemed at first to be horrible.  Actually, they were terribly painful and the residue still coats my days.  But what they’ve spawned is a resilience that I could never have mustered without going through those changes. I do not understand why they happened, but I have come to accept and embrace them.  In that alone is a quiet beauty that I enjoy…knowing that whatever changes come about down the road that I travel in life, there is only good awaiting me when I arrive at my destination.

“There is beauty in change, in that I never doubt.  When I face them and embrace them, I know goodness will come about.”  Felecia R. Weber 2014, OntheWingofaDove.com

Only God Knows

Only God Knows

“Portrait of a Young Girl,” 1899, Mary Cassatt. Image from a page of the 2013 Desk Calendar, courtesy of The Metropolitan Museum of Art Store

Only God knows what my future holds for me; where I am going and who it is I shall be…

“By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance.  And he went out, not knowing where he was going.”  Hebrews 11:8

Only God Knows

Only God knows what my future holds for me;

where I am going and who it is I shall be.

It is all overwhelming, I shudder at the thought;

when changes arise, with their lessons to be taught.

Only God knows how things will fall into place.

I do wonder though, how well I’ll finish the race.

I shall put forth the effort, I shall do all I can do;

but I can’t do it on my own Lord, so I’ll put all my trust in you.

Felecia R. Weber 2014, OntheWingofaDove.com

Life changes can be very scary; they can threaten to undo us.  But I take comfort in the fact that only God knows the outcome, and when we place ourselves under His care…change is always good.

On Facing Change

On Facing Change

on facing changeA Quote to Carry You

September 1, 2014

“There is nothing wrong with change, if it is in the right direction.”  Winston Churchill

Change can be the catalyst for moving forward or backward.  Whichever way it leads us, facing change requires us also to face who we truly are.  When our world is disrupted to any degree by change, we must make a choice whether to accept it or reject it and move on.  Whatever direction the next change that enter into your world points you to, may it be the best way for you.

Peace and love,

When Mistakes Happen

When Mistakes Happen

“Soap Bubbles,” 1859, Thomas Couture. Image from a page of the 2014 Desk Calendar, courtesy of The Metropolitan Museum of Art Store

When mistakes happen…it’s what we do with them that makes them invaluable.

“With men it is impossible, but not with God:  for with God all things are possible.”  Mark 10:27

I suppose one would describe me as being somewhat of a perfectionist, so when mistakes happen, they truly dig deep into my skin.  I am not unique in wanting to do everything that I set out to do as correctly, efficiently and effectively as I can. It gives me such a sense of satisfaction when I know I have done something to the very best of my abilities and the outcome of whatever it is has gone well.  On the other hand, no matter how hard I try to avoid them, when mistakes happen…they are hard to accept and sometimes even harder to remedy.  What can we do to fix them?

Although that question can be answered in as many different ways as there are mistakes to be made, I believe there really is one response that is appropriate for them all.  When mistakes happen, they can be the most valuable resources that we can ever come across.  Huh?  Yes, mistakes really can cause us to learn and grow in ways that we never would have if they’d never taken place.  In my own recent experiences of journeying through the phases of my husband’s illness, although his disease was more of a challenge rather than a mistake, I can tell you that along with the heartache and rocky roads, many blessings watered the paths, and now I am enjoying a lush harvest.

Many times we face situations that are so overwhelming when we are in the midst of them that it seems much easier to just give up and throw in the towel rather than facing the challenges head on and battling them to defeat.  I’d reached that point on numerous occasions during these past months.  “Oh that I had the wings of a dove; I’d fly away and be at rest.” (Psalm 55:6), was not only the theme for my blog…it literally became my mantra!  Looking back, even in that imagery, it takes a heavy effort for a bird to take off and soar high into flight.  It took an immense amount of discipline, courage and an even greater amount of surrendering to God’s enabling power to handle all that was required to meet the needs of my husband’s care.  But, being the person that I am today, stronger, more confident and capable of managing life’s storms, I can honestly say that I am grateful for the challenges, and mistakes, that cluttered the road.

Mistakes…let them happen…and when they do…let God see you through.

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”  Philippians 4:13

Peace and love,

Felecia
