In the Beginning…Christmas…creation…really?
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:1-5)
I am always amazed at the splendor of God’s creation. This seems a strange topic to write about during the Christmas season, in the beginning?…creation?…really? But, oh how relevant it is, and the scripture verse referenced above says it all.
Most often when we think of Jesus Christ at Christmastime, we think of the little baby lying in a manger surrounded by his earthly parents, the angels, the shepherds, the sheep and other animals. It is interesting that both earthly and heavenly “created beings” were present at His birth. Who else in the history of mankind was welcomed into the world in such a way? Somehow being born in a humble stable doesn’t seem to matter all that much. What matters is who that baby really is. “In the beginning…through him all things were made.”
The familiar story of creation found in the book of Genesis in the Bible, tells about how God spoke the world into existence: “And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from darkness.” (Genesis 1:3-4). The earth responded to Christ’s birth with light as well. If you’ll recall, wasn’t it a light, in the form of a star, that the magi followed? This star shone brightly over the place where he lay. A new life; the reason for the light that summoned the gathering of people from both near and far. And what they found being guided by the light, is life offered by the Savior, Christ Jesus. “In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.”
On that night, the angel announced to the shepherds that a savior had been born: “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:1-). A savior, a deliverer, one who offers hope and freedom from darkness. Where there is no light, there is no life, and darkness cannot exist in the light. Light is life and life only flourishes where there is light. “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
Indeed, creation, darkness, light, Christmas, they all relate to each other in a real, and to me, obvious way. We are real people living in a real world full of darkness and light. May the message and gift of Christmas not be put away and stored on the shelves until next year…let its light shine for you throughout the year and always.
“For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins.” (Colossians 1:13-14)

This is a time of year we should be humbled by these events and reflect on our own lives.
